Episode 78: Pot Shot

THE ROTUNDA - While Donald Trump and his allies scramble to defend his tax records, a second look at the world of politics and beauty pageants thanks to Trump’s feud with former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. The Rotunda gets featured on CBC Radio and Public Radio International as one of the best podcasts around. Meanwhile, despite Florida polls showing growing support for a medical marijuana initiative, Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater and former Florida Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Bell ramp up their fight against Amendment 2 with just weeks left before voters decide on the November ballot. News Service of Florida reporter Dara Kam breaks down the latest in Florida’s fight for medical marijuana including an update on why initiate’s front man, attorney John Morgan, is keeping out of the spotlight.

An administrative law judge says the Florida Department of Health has made a mess of medical marijuana regulations. Judge John Van Laningham’s expected ruling in a southwest Florida case sometime next month could throw the state’s budding cannabis industry into total disarray. Two years ago, the Florida Legislature made five licenses available to grow marijuana and process oil as a form of medicine. Since then, just one grower has opened a dispensary providing cannabis products for epileptic and other patients suffering debilitating illnesses. Laningham’s findings could reopen the licensing process because he’s signaling he thinks the department has failed to apply the law and rules equitably to all applicants. Read more here on

THE ROTUNDA - This episode gives looks into the lives of two veteran members of Tallahassee’s lobby corps. Ron Watson - a self-described scumbag lobbyist - dishes out some of tricks of the trade for those aspiring to jump into Florida’s legislative process. On the other side, Gomes talks with Louis C. Rotundo who says after 37 years, he’s getting out of lobbying due to  changes from term limits and lack of integrity in the process. Gomes also looks at the controversy surrounding Attorney General Pam Bondi’s support for Donald Trump as Gov. Rick Scott calls for a peaceful revolution toward a Trump presidency.  Plus the ongoing search for Florida’s new Insurance Commissioner.

Attorney John Morgan says he's confident medical marijuana will pass in November. Gomes also talks with Secretaries Christina K. Daly of the Department of Juvenile Justice and Mike Carroll with the Department of Children and Families about their ongoing efforts to identify and put a stop to human trafficking.
